34. VideoScheme Applications
With powerful computers and digital media it is possible to build systems that perform automatic analysis of video and audio data. The results of this analysis can be used to make existing applications (such as indexing, retrieval, and editing) more efficient, or to enable entirely new applications [Nag92] [Ued91] [Zha93]. It would certainly be desirable if computers could perform these analytical tasks as well as a trained human; but short of such a breakthrough in artificial intelligence there are numerous less-ambitious goals to be pursued by researchers in this field.
