Preface
Whether it was during my studies or, now, when preparing lectures, during scientific work or discussions of how the brain functions - over and over again I have reached a point where I need concise and precise information on a certain structure. In the standard reference books most terms are missing, and accessing information in textbooks and other scientific works or in original papers is quite tedious.
In short: a dictionary of terms in neuroanatomy and neurofunction was needed. In the course of many years of work the Dictionary of Human Neuroanatomy was compiled. Our purpose in preparing the dictionary was not to collect the latest scientific discussions and results but rather to present sound and comprehensive basic information which will help demonstrate the structures in their context quickly and efficiently. It should be a help to all those who need quick information on the structures of the human brain. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all those individuals who took part in producing the dictionary: to Dr. Lange for initiating the project and for the smooth cooperation; to Ms. Wilbertz for her efficiency in supporting production; to Dr. Harder for proofreading and valuable groundwork; to my family for their loving patience - and last but not least, to iAS GmbH (www.brainmedia.de) for the illustration on the cover page.
In closing, we would like to encourage you, the readers, to please contact us if you find that information is missing, if you find any mistakes or if you have any other suggestions or requests. All suggestions will be considered and, if possible, included in the next edition. Please mail your ideas to MartinHirsch@CompuServe.com. Thank you very much!
