In a previous example we identified a cyclic group with the additive group Z or with Z/mZ. (See the next section for a detailed analysis.) The notion of isomorphism makes the meaning of `identify' mathematically rigorous.

Isomorphic groups are the same up to changes of names of the elements and operations involved. The name change is carried out by the isomorphism.
