3. Installation of the Java client

There are three files you can download for the client. If the Java Developer Kit (JDK) or the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.1.1 or above is installed on your system, you only need to download the classes for the Java client of XploRe. The classes are distributed as a tar.gz file (Unix) or a .zip file (Windows). After downloading the file, copy it into a directory of your choise and extract it. Now some class files will be created in this directory. To start the client change into this directory and execute the command:

java XplJav [server port] 

or

jre XplJav [server port] 

Here server is the host name (or IP adress) of the machine, where the XploRe Java Server is runing. port must be the port number which is specified by the port option of the server.

example:

java XplJav Xplhost 8888 
jre XplJav 141.20.100.231 4435 

The second example starts a client and connects it to the host 141.20.100.231, which is located at Humboldt-University Berlin.

If Java is not installed on your system, you need to download the XploRe client versions including the JRE or download the JDK from Internet Sun Microsystems. If you want to download the JDK follow the download and installation instructions of Sun Microsystems to install the JDK and read the last paragraph to setup the Xplore client. An easier way is to download the XploRe client and the JRE from the XploRe download page. If you do so, you only need to unpack the file in a directory of your choise. Then you can use a script (or batch file in Windows) to start the client. If your operating system is Windows 95 or Windows NT execute the commands:

cd myXplClientDir\bin 
xpljava [server port] 

(myXplClientDir is the directory, where you have unpacked the .zip file) If your operating system is Solaris execute the commands:

cd myXplClientDir/X4_Java/bin 
xpljava $PWD [server port] 

(myXplClientDir is the directory, where you have unpacked the .tar.gz file) If you do not use the server and port options, the client will be connect to a host, located at Humboldt-University Berlin.
