Modern browser (Netscape 4.x or Internet Explorer 4.x or higher)
To use the electronic books efficiently you need a modern browser. If you do not have a modern browser then you will find one on the CD under Netscape. If you do not want to use this browser you can try to read the HTML pages. Your browser must support frames. Of course you can not use the (interactive) examples at all.You should activate JavaScript, because the (interactive) examples rely on JavaScript. Without JavaScript the (interactive) examples will not work. If you start the examples from the PDF version of the book then you need a connection to the internet, only the HTML-version of the book runs locally on your CD. Be aware that activating JavaScript in your browser and connecting to the internet may result in serious security problems.
The layout of the HTML pages relies on Cascading style sheets. Please, for an optimal view activate them in your browser.
All (interactive) examples in the book are based on Java. If you deactivate Java then the (interactive) examples will not work. Activating Java in your browser and connecting to the internet may result in serious security problems.
The (interactive) examples in the electronic book require Java Version 1.1. You can update your browser by installing a plug-in which is under plugins on the CD. Additionally you have to install the swing.exe in the lib-directory of the Java plugin.
Alternatively you may install the Java Runtime Environment including the swing classes from the CD.

Windows operating system (test requires JavaScript)
To execute the interactive examples from the HTML version of the electronic book a Windows program (here: XploRe Windows server) is required. Because of that the examples will work only if this program is started.
If you do not use a 32bit-Windows operating system (Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000) then you need a internet connection to execute the (interactive) examples from the PDF version of the electronic book.
If you use a 32bit-Windows operating system then the XploRe Windows server must have been started before you click on Execute or Edit for an example. Note: just open ONLY one example at the same time!
If you start mdsserv.exe (either by hand or automatically) then you see the following dialog:
Instead of pressing "Start ebook" click on "Setup". After some screens you reach a screen with two choices: "Java runtime environment" and "Java runtime environment and XploRe". Choose the first option if you just want to install the Java Runtime environment and the swing classes. The second option installs additionally the academic version of XploRe (either on your harddisk or runs it from CD).
