Simulated data: Cortex (detail) This shows an additional close-up from a region nearby (but not identical to) that of Figure 8. The "Nissl-stained" somata have been rendered invisible to better show the relationship of the incoming afferents to their target cells. Each afferent and each cortical cell has had all of its segments set to the same uniform hue, to help visually to disentangle the network, which however is better appreciated with a 3D display than in a 2D image. Note that some of the afferents branch before they reach the layer of target cells, and that some target cells (e.g.: at the far right) receive fewer or no afferent input (see discussion in chapter 12).
