Problem and Objectives
Problem: Everglades landscape altered via large-scale water management
Mosaic of natural wetlands, urban, and agricultural land use
Canals and levees impound and redirect water that historically flowed into the Everglades
Elevated nutrient inputs from agricultural areas and altered flows & hydroperiods have been hypothesized to be responsible for the changes in the landscape vegetation patterns
Objectives: Develop a simulation modeling tool for evaluating scenarios of water management
Regional scale model that incorporates dynamic hydrologic/ecological processes
Predict landscape responses to varying hydrologic and nutrient regimes
Provide a focus to research programs and models on other scales
