The Eelgrass Sector

The Big Picture
The eelgrass sector estimates both photosynthetic (shoots) and non-photosynthetic production (roots and rhizomes). Shoots are lost to the detrital pool and become wrack. Seeds fall from the wrack and are either lost through decay, consumption, etc. or eventually become new plants. Wrack piles up on the shore and is either eaten or decays.

The Eelgrass Sector
Eelgrass primary production supports both leaf production and roots and rhizomes growth. Primary production is limited by nutrients, light, and water temperature. Shoot biomass is lost through respiration, consumption, and litterfall. Roots and rhizomes biomass is lost due to consumption, respiration, and decay. The image below depicts the major inputs and outputs of the eelgrass sector.
