The data on this CDROM are digital terrain models and plotfiles matching the
maps in the Antarctic Atlas:

Herzfeld UC (2004) Atlas of Antarctica. Topographic Maps from Geostatistical
Analysis of Satellite Radar Altimeter Data. Springer Berlin Heidelberg New York

The Antarctic Atlas should be quoted as above when the data are used.

DIGITAL TERRAIN MODELS (DTMs)

Files to maps in section (D) are organized following the Atlas scheme:

/atlasdisk1/ers1/row63_68E
               /row67_721E
               /row71_77.E
               /row75_80.E
               /row78_815.E

           /geosat/row63_68G
                  /row67_721G

Files to maps in section (F) are located in the directory:

/atlasdisk1/detail

Comments:

Each map is based on a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) constructed for the
map area. A file containing a DTM has the ending ".dtm" and contains
ascii data in 5 columns:

For example, the first 3 lines in the file

/atlasdisk1/geosat/row63_68G/m69e61_77n63_68.g.dtm

are:

     182000. -7.40100E+06 27.6683 0.201866 5
     185000. -7.40100E+06 27.7415 0.136666 11
     188000. -7.40100E+06 27.9249 0.128479 13

column 1 - UTM coordinate, East (unit: meters)
column 2 - UTM coordinate, North (unit: meters)
column 3 - elevation (unit: meters above WGS84)
column 4 - a value not needed for plotting maps
column 5 - a value not needed for plotting maps

DTMs with a ".0." in the filename are DTMs along coastal areas with
zero values added outside of the area of interpolation/extrapolation.

Ascii data are device independent, i.e. can be used on any computer platform,
in any text editor and any plotting software (no special system requirements).

For more information, the user is referred to chapter C of the Atlas.

Special Maps:

/atlasdisk1/ers1/row67_721E/m3We11W_5n67_721-g.e.0.dtm Fimbul Map,
ERS-1 Data, GEOSAT variogram

/atlasdisk1/geosat/row67_721G/m3We11W_5n67_721-e.g.0.dtm Fimbul Map,
GEOSAT Data, ERS-1 variogram

Chart:

The chart showing the schematic location of maps relative to each other is
located in

/atlasdisk1/maps/chD/eps/chart2.eps

PLOTFILES:

Plotfiles for all maps are located in the directory:

/atlasdisk1/maps/chD/row63-68/
                    /row67-721/
                    /row71-77/
                    /row75-80/
                    /row78-815/
           /maps/chF

Plotfiles have an extension ".eps" and are encapsulated postscript files
(postscript files with a boundary box added). These files can be sent directly
to a (postscript) printer (no special software requirements).
