On behalf of the Norwegian Nation I have the honor to wish our foreign guests welcome to Norway.
From all countries they have come together here in the capital of Norway, a band of cultivators of science, men that have dedicated their lives to research, learned men, the most famous names, they all have congregated in a small nation in the far north.
They have come together to celebrate the centenary of our countryman Niels Henrik Abel. This illustrious audience shows us the greatness of Abel’s lifetime achievement. It shows the significance of his contribution to the world culture.
His life was as a shooting star, so short; his name and his work will, however, live through the generations shining with growing brilliance.
Ye learned men of Science! You will not judge a country on its wealth and might. You will judge a nation on the contribution it has given to the world culture.
Thus the tribute you extend to the genius of Abel, by coming here, also extends to the nation that fostered him. In this nation’s name I therefore thank you heartily.
Once more: I welcome you to our Country and our People.
