Sergio Albeverio

Born: 1939

Sergio Albeverio has his doctorate from ETH in Zürich and has worked for longer periods at Imperial College in London, Princeton University, and the University of Oslo, until 1979 when he became professor of probability theory and mathematical physics at Ruhr-Universität Bochum. From 1997 he is professor at the University of Bonn.

Albeverio’s field of research is mathematical physics, with special emphasis on the use of stochastical methods. He has given path-breaking contributions to quantum field theory, quantum mechanics, as well as to stochastic analysis with special focus on properties of Dirichlet forms. Albeverio has had an extensive collaboration with Norwegian researchers. He was at the University of Oslo for two periods, 1972–73 and 1974–76, with R. Høegh-Krohn as his main collaborator. His contact with Norwegian mathematicians resulted in two larger monographs, one on solvable models in quantum mechanics, the other on non-standard analysis.

Albeverio has directed several national and European research projects, many of these with the special aim of supporting researchers in eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
