Donald Knuth is professor emeritus of Computer Science at Stanford University.
Knuth is among the foremost researchers within informatics and has given important
contributions within a number of areas, such as
programming languages;
combinatorial algorithms;
effectivity analysis of algorithms;
generators of pseudo-random integer sequences;
automatic treatment of algebraic formulas and equations;
advanced typography, e.g. in connection with mathematical formulas.
Knuth has in all of his work displayed a deep and close relationship with mathematics,
especially combinatorics and discrete mathematics, and he has also obtained important results in
these areas. His monumental book series The Art of Computer Programming represents a landmark
in the field, and his typesetting system TeX is one of the most used, not least in journals
and books with demanding typography.
Knuth spent the academic year 1972–73 at the University of Oslo and had a great impact on the
further development of informatics in Norway.
