Arild Stubhaug

Born: 1948

Arild Stubhaug has a cand.mag. degree, with the subjects mathematics, literature theory, and religion history. He had his debut as an author in 1970 and has since then published several books of fiction, mainly poetry.

In 1996 he authored the book Et foranskutt lyn – Niels Henrik Abel og hans tid, a biography of the great mathematician. The book was a success, both nationally and internationally, and Stubhaug was awarded the Brage Prize for it. The book has been translated into English and German, and there will also be a Japanese and a French edition of the book.

Stubhaug has also written the biography Det var mine tankers djervhet – matematikeren Sophus Lie. This book appeared in the fall of 2000 and has already appeared in English as well. He has, with this book, contributed in a new and important way to throw light upon the history of mathematics in Norway. Together, the books about Abel and Lie give a view of the Norwegian history of mathematics as an important part of Norwegian cultural history – all through the 19th century.

Stubhaug is presently attached to the Institut Mittag-Leffler in Stockholm, with the purpose to write a biography of the influential Swedish mathematician Gösta Mittag-Leffler.
