• Member of the International Advisory Group of the European Bank  for the Reconstruction, and
• Development  of the New Shelter for the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, Ukraine. From 1998 to present
• Recipient of the 2001 “Karl Terzaghi Award” granted by the American  Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE)
• Doctor in Civil Engineering (Honoris Causa), University of Ghent, Belgium, 2004
