ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of basic FORTRAN and SciLab scripting is expected as a prerequisite for the exercises included in this book.
Readers who need more training are encouraged to study my textbook "Ocean Modelling for Beginners" published by
Springer which contains more details than necessary at an advanced level. On the basis of this, the author believes
that it is sufficient to highlight only the most important features of computer codes in "info.txt" files accompanying
most exercises. The reader is encouraged to play around with settings in own studies.

It should be mentioned that certain SciLab functions are claimed obsolete in Versions 5 (this book uses Version 5.1.1), such as the "xset"
function. Readers familiar with earlier SciLab versions should consult the help menue for more information. Nevertheless, the author
could solve certain problems (such as suppression of contour labels) only with use of the "xset" function that surprisingly still worked
for certain tasks. Hopefully, future versions of SciLab offer more elegant solutions.
