                      Open-Source FORTRAN Programs

                      ----------------------------

The FORTRAN programs provided with this suite of software, i.e., every

program whose source-code file ends with .for, were compiled with Microsoft

FORTRAN Version 5.1. These include LOWRY, RISE, SPANFRST and YICHAN.

Specific compiler options used include huge memory model, MS extensions,

80286 processor, and default libraries.

FORTRAN 77 being the historically most important dialect, any compiler that

supports F77 with extensions should work--in theory. However, due to the

extremely large size of some of the datasets and outputs, a relatively

sophisticated compiler may be required. For those interested in

experimenting beyond a personal computer, most of the programs were also

compiled with the Digital Equipment Corporation VMS FORTRAN 77 compiler. Any

necessary modifications for this platform are noted in the source code.

Since executable codes are adequate for the LOWRY, RISE, SPANFRST and YICHAN

applications, A FORTRAN compiler has not been provided with this suite of

software. Researchers who wish to extend the source codes for LOWRY, RISE,

SPANFRST and YICHAN may wish to search for appropriate F77 compilers over the

Internet.
